Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The US National Science Foundation seeks to broaden participation in innovation ecosystems that advance key technologies (e.g. advanced manufacturing, advanced wireless, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum information science, semiconductors, novel materials, and microelectronics). Establishing more inclusive innovation ecosystems requires broad networks of partners working together in support of use-inspired research, translation of research to practice, and workforce development. The EPIIC program aims to provide minority serving institutions, primarily undergrad institutions and two-year institutions with limited or no research capacity, the support necessary to become equitable partners in regional innovation.

EMERGE is a consortium of universities that seek to broaden their participation in regional innovation ecosystems by: (1) increasing individual institutional capacity to recruit and support collaborative R&D projects, (2) developing innovative partnership models that provide value to all stakeholders, and (3) leveraging partnerships to equip underserved communities with tools to enable upward social mobility.

Kettering University (Flint, MI), University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, TX), University of Northern Colorado (Greeley, CO), and Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC).

To enhance the nation’s capacity for innovation, we must tap into the full range of regional and institutional assets and utilize diverse talent from all types of institutions. 62.4% of all degrees and 42.4% of degrees in STEM disciplines are awarded by institutions that are not classified as Research Institutions (Carnegie R1 and R2).
